Types of moisturizers: a quick guide
Moisturizers come in different formats. Each one suits a different skin type and climate.
Gel moisturizer
Water-based, lightweight, and fast-absorbing. Perfect for oily skin and humid Indian summers. Provides hydration without heaviness or shine.
Lotion
A balanced middle ground between gels and creams. Thinner than cream, more moisturizing than gel. Works for normal and combination skin year-round.
Cream
Rich, oil-heavy, and occlusive. Designed for dry skin or cold, dry climates. Creates a seal over the skin that prevents moisture loss. Can feel heavy in humid weather.
Oil-based
Facial oils like squalane or rosehip are occlusives, not hydrators. They lock in existing moisture but do not add water to the skin. Best layered over a hydrating serum or toner.

Which moisturizer type do you need?
Your skin type and your climate both matter. Here is the short version.
Oily skin
Gel moisturizer
Lightweight, non-comedogenic gel moisturizers hydrate without adding oil. Look for hyaluronic acid or glycerin as the main humectant. Avoid anything labelled "rich" or "nourishing."
Dry skin
Cream with ceramides
A rich cream with ceramides replenishes the lipid barrier. CeraVe Moisturizing Cream is the reference product in this category. Dr. Sheth's Ceramide and Vitamin C cream is a strong Indian alternative.
Sensitive skin
Fragrance-free, minimal ingredients
The fewer ingredients, the less chance of irritation. Cetaphil and CeraVe both excel here. Avoid products with fragrance, essential oils, or more than 20 ingredients in the list.
Barrier repair
Ceramide-based
If your skin is stinging, peeling, or reacting to products that used to work fine, your barrier is compromised. Use a ceramide-based moisturizer (CeraVe, Dr. Sheth's, or Re'equil) and stop all actives until it recovers.
Ceramides vs hyaluronic acid: what is the difference?
These two ingredients show up in nearly every moisturizer, but they do completely different things. Understanding the difference helps you pick the right product.
Ceramides
Oil-barrier repair
Ceramides are lipids (fats) that make up about 50% of the skin barrier. They fill the gaps between skin cells and prevent water from escaping. When your barrier is damaged (from over-exfoliation, retinol, or harsh cleansers), ceramides are what you need to rebuild it.
Best for: dry skin, damaged barrier, flaking, stinging
Hyaluronic acid
Water-hydration boost
Hyaluronic acid is a humectant that holds up to 1000x its weight in water. It pulls moisture from the environment into your skin. It does not repair the barrier and it does not add oil. If your skin feels tight but is not flaking, you are dehydrated, not dry.
Best for: dehydrated skin, fine lines, dull complexion
The simple rule: dry skin needs ceramides (oil barrier is broken). Dehydrated skin needs hyaluronic acid (water content is low). Many people have both, which is why products like CeraVe combine ceramides with HA. If you are not sure which you need, start with a ceramide moisturizer and add a hyaluronic acid serum only if needed.
