Vitamin C is the gold standard for brightening, but the form matters more than the percentage. L-ascorbic acid (LAA) is the most studied and most effective form, but it is also the least stable, especially in Indian heat and humidity. It oxidizes fast, turns yellow-brown, and becomes useless. Derivatives like ethyl ascorbyl ether and ascorbyl glucoside are weaker but far more stable.
The practical advice: if you store your products in an air-conditioned room and use them within 2-3 months, LAA serums work well. If your bathroom gets hot, go with a derivative-based formula. Forms of vitamin C: what actually matters
Not all vitamin C is the same. The form determines how effective it is, how stable it is, and how well it survives Indian heat. Here is what you need to know.
L-Ascorbic Acid
Most effective, least stable
The gold standard form with the most research. Works at 10-20%. Oxidizes quickly in heat and light. If your serum turns brown, it has gone bad. Store in a cool, dark place and use within 2-3 months of opening.
Ethyl Ascorbyl Ether
Good middle ground
Oil and water soluble. Converts to vitamin C in the skin. Far more stable than LAA. Most Indian brands (Minimalist, Deconstruct) use this form. Works well in Indian conditions.
Ascorbyl Glucoside
Most stable, gentlest
Water soluble, very stable. Converts slowly to vitamin C. Less potent than LAA but won't irritate sensitive skin. Good choice if other forms break you out or cause stinging.
Indian climate note
Heat kills L-ascorbic acid.
If you live in a city where summer temperatures cross 35C and your bathroom is not air-conditioned, consider a derivative-based vitamin C serum instead of pure LAA. Store all vitamin C products in the fridge during summer months. If the product turns dark yellow or brown, discard it. It will do nothing for your skin.
