- · For pure overnight lip hydration, Vaseline performs the same core function as Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask.
- · Laneige's real advantage is texture (less greasy, does not migrate) and a tiny bit of humectant moisture from HA. The berry complex and vitamin C are mostly marketing in this formula.
- · The price difference is 5x to 7x. Whether that is worth it depends entirely on what you value.
Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask has become one of those cult products that people swear by. It shows up in every "holy grail" list, every Korean skincare haul, every influencer's nightstand photo. On the other side, there is Vaseline. The most unglamorous product in existence. Your grandmother used it. It costs less than a coffee. And dermatologists have been recommending it for decades.
So when you are standing in a store deciding between a Rs 1,420 lip mask in a pretty pot and a Rs 200 tub of petroleum jelly, the question is fair: is there actually a difference worth paying for?
What Each Product Actually Is
Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask (Rs 600 to Rs 1,420 for 8g to 20g depending on size and retailer) is a leave-on overnight lip treatment. The formula includes a proprietary berry complex (raspberry, strawberry, cranberry, blueberry extracts), vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, and shea butter in a base that includes hydrogenated polyisobutene and other emollients. It has a thick, balm-like texture and a noticeable berry scent.
Vaseline Lip Therapy (Rs 150 to Rs 200 for 17g) is, at its core, petroleum jelly with minor additions depending on the variant. The original is essentially 100% petrolatum. Some variants add cocoa butter or aloe, but the primary ingredient doing the work is always petroleum jelly. No fragrance in the original. No frills.

The Science of Lip Hydration
Your lips have no oil glands. Zero. Unlike the rest of your face, which produces sebum to create a natural moisture barrier, your lips are on their own. This is why they dry out faster than any other part of your skin. They are also thinner, with fewer cell layers, and are constantly exposed to saliva, air, food, and temperature changes.
Any good lip product needs three things working together: humectants, emollients, and occlusives. Humectants attract and hold water. Emollients soften and repair the lip surface. Occlusives form a physical barrier that prevents moisture from escaping. Of the three, occlusion matters most for overnight use, because without that seal, everything underneath evaporates by morning. But occlusion alone is not enough. It can only protect moisture that already exists. On severely dry lips with no moisture to lock in, a pure occlusive just seals in the dryness.
Petroleum jelly is the gold standard occlusive. It has been studied for decades. It reduces transepidermal water loss by over 85%. No other commonly available ingredient comes close to that number.
The real question, then, is whether the extras in Laneige add meaningful benefit over plain petroleum jelly for the specific job of keeping your lips hydrated overnight.
The Honest Answer
For overnight lip protection, both products do the same job. Petrolatum is the gold standard occlusive, with a moisture retention rate above 85%. Laneige uses a different occlusive base, but the result is comparable. Both seal in moisture effectively.
Laneige does include hyaluronic acid, which acts as a humectant. The concentration is low, lower than it should be to make a significant difference. But it is there, and it means the formula provides a small amount of moisture on its own, not just a seal. That matters if your lips are already dehydrated: an occlusive without any humectant underneath has nothing to protect. Laneige's HA gives it a slight functional edge here, even if the amount is modest.
The vitamin C and berry complex are a different story. In a formula this heavy in waxes, gums, and petroleum derivatives, these extracts struggle to remain stable and have very little chance of penetrating the lip surface. They read well on the label, but functionally, their presence or absence changes almost nothing about how this product performs.
Where Laneige genuinely wins is texture. The blend of occlusives, waxes, and thickeners creates a formula that feels meaningfully different from petroleum jelly. It is less greasy, does not migrate across your face overnight, and locks in moisture without sitting heavy on the lips. The berry scent is pleasant (though some Vaseline Lip Therapy variants also smell decent). Overall, Laneige wears better and feels better. That is not a small thing for a product you sleep in.
But the math remains simple. Same core function. A marginal hydration advantage from the HA. A better texture. And label ingredients that look impressive but contribute very little. That is the gap between Rs 12/g and Rs 71/g.

If you want some hydration along with the occlusion, Laneige is a well-made product. The texture is soft without being heavy, and your lips do not feel coated the way they can with petroleum jelly. If you have always disliked how greasy Vaseline feels, Laneige is a genuine upgrade in wearability.
If you have the money to spend, it is a nice product. The experience matters. Skincare is also self-care. A product you enjoy using is a product you will actually use consistently. And if you are buying a gift for someone, a pot of Laneige is a much nicer present than a tub of Vaseline. Nobody is putting petroleum jelly in a gift bag.
When Vaseline Wins
Budget. If you are a student or just do not want to spend Rs 1,420 on lip care, Vaseline is the obvious choice. It does the core job just as well.
Pure effectiveness. Dermatologists recommend petroleum jelly for lip care more than any other product. It has decades of clinical evidence behind it. It is not glamorous, but it works.
Sensitive lips. Vaseline original (the unfragranced version specifically) has no fragrance, no botanical extracts, no potential irritants. If your lips react to fragranced products or you have eczema-prone skin around your mouth, Vaseline original is the safer bet.
Availability. You can find Vaseline in every medical store, general store, and supermarket in India. Laneige requires a trip to Nykaa, Sephora, or an online order.
The TikTok Claim: They Are the Same
You have probably seen the videos. Someone holds up both products and says "they are literally the same thing." That is not entirely wrong. Laneige does have additional ingredients (berry complex, hyaluronic acid, shea butter), but most of those extras are either unstable in the waxy base or present in amounts too small to matter. The hyaluronic acid adds a tiny amount of humectant moisture. The berry complex and vitamin C are mostly marketing in this formula.
For the core function of sealing in lip moisture overnight, they perform comparably. The real difference is texture and feel. Laneige is less greasy, does not migrate, and feels softer. That is not nothing. But functionally, the job being done is the same.
The Verdict
If lip hydration is your only goal, Vaseline at Rs 200 does the job. Period. Laneige is a nicer experience with a better texture that does not feel greasy or heavy. The 5x to 6x price premium is for that texture, a tiny bit of extra hydration from the HA, and the overall feel. Whether that is worth it is your call, not a skincare question.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask just Vaseline?
Not exactly, but close. They share the same core function: occlusion. Laneige has additional ingredients like berry complex, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin C, but most of these are either unstable in the waxy base or present in very small amounts. The hyaluronic acid adds a tiny bit of humectant moisture. The real difference is texture: Laneige feels less greasy, does not migrate, and sits better on the lips. For the primary job of sealing in moisture overnight, both perform comparably.
Can Vaseline actually hydrate lips?
Vaseline does not add moisture to your lips. It creates a barrier that prevents the moisture already in your lips from evaporating. That is what occlusion means. If your lips are already severely dehydrated, apply a thin layer of a hydrating lip balm or even plain water first, then seal it with Vaseline.
Is Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask safe for sensitive lips?
It contains fragrance, which can be irritating for some people with sensitive or eczema-prone lips. If your lips react to fragranced products, Vaseline (original, unfragranced) is the safer choice.
How long does a pot of Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask last?
The 20g pot typically lasts 3 to 4 months with nightly use. The 8g mini lasts about 6 weeks. Vaseline Lip Therapy (17g) lasts roughly 2 to 3 months depending on how generously you apply.
Is the Laneige lip mask worth the money?
If pure lip hydration is your only goal, no. Vaseline does the same core job for a fraction of the price. If you value the texture (less greasy, does not migrate, feels soft), the scent, and the overall experience, and you have the money to spend, it is a genuinely decent product. The berry complex and vitamin C are mostly marketing in this formula, but the texture alone is a real upgrade. Neither is a wrong choice.
