There are thousands of lipsticks in the world, but only a handful earn icon status. These 50 outlive trends, live in makeup artists' kits, and turn up in the same conversations decade after decade.

Most lists that rank them are written for an American shelf. This one is not. We fact-checked all 50 for 2026, corrected the names and finishes that other lists get wrong, and then asked the question that actually matters if you live here: can you buy it in India, what does it cost in rupees, and what is the closest dupe under 600 rupees? Of the 50, 36 are sold through an official Indian channel, 10 are import-only, and 4 are discontinued. Every card tells you which.

No affiliate links. No brand partnerships. If something is overhyped, drying, or quietly discontinued, we say so. Jump to the 50 lipsticks, the undertone guide, or the lip-care reality check.

How to read this list

Every lipstick below shows a colour-accurate swatch, the real shade and finish, the US price, and three things no other list bothers with:

  • India badge. Green means it is sold through an official Indian retailer. Amber means import-only (grey-market, no warranty). Grey means discontinued.
  • INR price. The real rupee price where it is officially sold. Prices marked with a tilde are approximate and worth confirming on the retailer's page.
  • The dupe. A specific, India-available lipstick (mostly under 600 rupees) that gets you the same colour story for a fraction of the price. We matched these by comparing the actual shade, not the name, cross-referencing swatch references like Temptalia so a "dupe" is a real colour match and not wishful thinking.

Use the tabs to filter by finish, or tick Buyable in India only to hide everything you cannot actually get here.

Which lipstick suits your undertone

The single biggest reason a lipstick looks wrong is not the colour, it is the undertone fighting your skin. Most Indian skin reads warm or neutral, which is why brick reds and brown nudes feel so effortless on so many people, and why an icy blue-red can occasionally look harsh on very warm light-medium skin. None of this is a rule, it is a starting point. Wear whatever you love, just wear it on purpose.

If your skin reads Lean toward From this list
Warm (golden, olive) Brick reds, terracotta, brown nudes, coral roses MAC Chili, YSL 1971, Maybelline Touch of Spice, CT Stoned Rose
Cool (pink, blue) Blue-reds, true berries, cool fuchsias MAC Ruby Woo, Dior 999, NARS Dragon Girl, Rimmel 107
Neutral Neutral reds and mauve nudes go either way Givenchy 333, Fire & Ice, MAC Twig, Clinique Black Honey
Deep skin Pigment-rich reds and browns show up best; sheers can vanish MAC Chili, Fenty Uncensored, MAC Diva, Huda Trophy Wife

The lip-care reality check

We are a skincare site, so we will not pretend a 12-hour transfer-proof matte is kind to your lips. It is not. Here is the honest version.

Long-wear liquid mattes and ink tints are drying by design. The polymers and volatile solvents that make Maybelline Matte Ink, Fenty Stunna, and Peripera Ink the Velvet last all day also pull water from the lip surface and cling to any flaky skin. They are brilliant for a wedding or a long day. They are not an everyday habit your lips will thank you for.

If you wear them often, build a tiny routine. Exfoliate gently once a week, apply a plain balm and let it fully absorb before colour, and take bare days between heavy wears. Avoid reapplying a drying matte over an already-dry layer, that is what creates the cracked, patchy look.

Satins, creams, and sheers are the comfortable end. Clinique Black Honey, MAC Twig, Chanel Rouge Coco, and Benefit Benetint all wear like tinted balms or close to it. If your lips are chronically chapped, live here and save the liquid mattes for occasions.

One more honest note: a balm with SPF matters more than most people think. Lips have almost no melanin and burn and pigment easily, so a daytime balm with sun protection under your colour is the single best lip-care upgrade you can make. See our sunscreen guide for the logic on filters.

India's own icons (that belong in this conversation)

A global list skews toward Western shelves, but a few homegrown shades are every bit as iconic here, and they are the dupes the rest of this page keeps pointing to. If you are starting a collection in India, start with these.

  • Lakme 9to5 Primer + Matte in Red Coat. The definitive Indian red and the go-to Ruby Woo and NARS Dragon Girl dupe. Around 525 rupees.
  • Sugar Matte As Hell Crayon. India's answer to the NARS and Maybelline crayon format, in shades like Scarlett O'Hara and Mary Jane. Around 499 to 599 rupees.
  • Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink (liquid). Arguably more iconic in India than the Ink Crayon, and already on this list at 749 rupees.
  • Nykaa So Matte and Matte To Last. The bestselling affordable lines that show up in every Indian roundup, from 299 rupees.

Quick-pick guide

Do not want to read all 50? Here is the short answer.

Best on deep Indian skin MAC Chili, the brick-red that flatters almost everyone
All-day wedding wear Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink (₹749), prep lips first
Icon status under ₹600 Lakme 9to5 Red Coat or Sugar Matte As Hell Scarlett O'Hara
The prestige splurge Dior 999, Chanel Rouge Allure Pirate, the ones people remember owning

Common questions

What is the best red lipstick for Indian skin tones?

There is no single answer because Indian skin spans a huge range of undertones, but the safest bets are brick and brown-reds rather than icy blue-reds. MAC Chili, YSL 1971 Rouge Provocation, and Lakme 9to5 Red Coat flatter medium to deep skin because their warmth works with golden and olive undertones. Cool blue-reds like Ruby Woo or Dior 999 can look striking on cooler or deeper complexions but tend to wash out very warm skin. Swatch on your fingertip, not the back of your hand, since fingertip skin is closer to your lip tone.

Is MAC Ruby Woo available in India, and what is a cheaper dupe?

Yes. Ruby Woo is sold in India on Nykaa, Tira, and Sephora India, though it now ships as part of MAC's reformulated MACximal Silky Matte line (the old Retro Matte bullet was discontinued in 2024). It costs around 2,550 rupees for the full size. The closest budget dupe is Sugar Cosmetics Matte As Hell Crayon in Scarlett O'Hara (around 599 rupees), and for a long-wear version, Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink in Pioneer (around 749 rupees) gives you the same blue-red.

What is a good Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk dupe in India?

Pillow Talk itself is sold in India, but only through Nykaa (Charlotte Tilbury is Nykaa-exclusive here), at around 3,450 rupees. If you want the same blurred my-lips-but-better nude-pink for less, Maybelline Color Sensational in a nude shade like Touch of Nude (around 399 rupees) or Nykaa Cosmetics So Matte in a rosy nude (around 299 rupees) get you most of the way there. The texture will not be identical, but the colour story is very close.

Are Fenty, Tom Ford, ColourPop, and Rimmel sold in India?

Not officially. As of 2026, Fenty Beauty, Tom Ford Beauty, ColourPop, and Rimmel have no authorised Indian retail channel. Any listings you see on marketplaces are grey-market imports with no warranty, inflated prices, and sometimes questionable freshness. Brands that ARE officially in India include MAC, Charlotte Tilbury (Nykaa), Dior, YSL, Chanel (boutiques only), Estee Lauder, Lancome, Huda Beauty, NARS, Clinique, Maybelline, and Revlon.

Do long-wear liquid lipsticks damage your lips?

They do not damage lips in a medical sense, but transfer-proof liquid mattes and long-wear ink tints are genuinely drying. The same polymers and volatile solvents that make them last 12 hours also pull moisture from the lip surface and cling to any flaky skin, which is why they look patchy on chapped lips. If you wear them often, exfoliate gently once a week, apply a balm and let it absorb before the lipstick, and give your lips bare days to recover. This is the one active-cosmetic category where less is genuinely more.

Cool-toned versus warm-toned lipstick: which suits Indian skin?

Most Indian skin reads warm or neutral, so warm and neutral lipsticks (brick reds, brown nudes, coral roses, terracotta) tend to look the most natural and flattering. Cool tones (blue-reds, true fuchsias, cool berries) create contrast and can look high-impact, especially on deeper skin, but on very warm light-medium skin they can look harsh or ashy. The trick is not to avoid cool tones, it is to wear them deliberately as a statement rather than an everyday default.

Method & sources

Shades, finishes, and prices were verified in June 2026 against official brand sites and Indian retailers (Nykaa, Tira, Sephora India, Amazon.in, Myntra). India availability reflects authorised channels only; marketplace listings for brands without official India retail are flagged as import. Prices marked with a tilde are approximate and shift with currency and stock, so confirm on the retailer's page before buying. Shade swatches are colour-accurate renderings, not brand-published colour values, and were cross-checked against independent swatch databases including Temptalia. Formulas are occasionally reformulated, renamed, or discontinued, so always swatch in natural light or check the brand's site for the current version.
