Aqualogica Sunscreen: The Brand That Quietly Became One of India's Best
They were one of the first to do fluid sunscreens in India. Then the market moved on. Now they've pivoted into mineral filters with in-vivo testing. Here's why they deserve another look.

- . Aqualogica was one of the first Indian brands to do fluid sunscreens. Nobody else was making lightweight, non-greasy sunscreens in India five or six years ago.
- . Their newer ranges (Radiance+, Glow+, Bright+) have pivoted to mineral filters with in-vivo testing. Photo-stable, no white cast, genuinely good formulations.
- . They have about 10-12 unique sunscreen formulas. The rest of the SKUs on their store are size variants and bundles.
The brand that got there first
Here is a piece of Indian skincare history that most people don't know: Aqualogica was one of the first brands to make fluid sunscreens in India. Five, six years ago, if you wanted a sunscreen that didn't feel like you were spreading white paint on your face, your options were limited to expensive Korean imports. Indian sunscreens were thick, greasy, and left a visible white cast on medium-to-dark skin.
Aqualogica changed that. They made lightweight, water-based formulations that felt more like a serum than a sunscreen. At a price point that Indian consumers could actually afford. They weren't the only ones doing it, but they were among the earliest, and for a while they were the go-to recommendation for people who hated the feel of traditional sunscreens.
What happened next
The market caught up. Minimalist launched their SPF 50 at ₹399. Re'equil came in with six UV filters. Foxtale made a dewy SPF that sat beautifully under makeup. Suddenly the space that Aqualogica had pioneered was crowded with options. Many of us (including me) moved on to other brands.
But Aqualogica didn't sit still. While we weren't paying attention, they did something that very few Indian skincare brands do well: they pivoted.
The pivot that matters
The older Aqualogica ranges (Detan+, Illuminate+) used a mix of chemical and hybrid filters. Some of these were older-generation filters that weren't the most photo-stable. They worked, but they weren't winning any formulation awards.
The new ranges are a different story. The Radiance+ range, the Glow+ range, the Bright+ range. These use completely mineral filters. No chemical filters at all. They are among the most photo-stable filter systems available in Indian sunscreens under ₹600. And they come with in-vivo SPF testing, which means the protection claims have been verified on actual human skin, not just in a lab.
A full mineral sunscreen range that doesn't cause white cast, doesn't feel sticky, and actually protects for a good amount of time. That is not easy to formulate. And Aqualogica is one of the few Indian brands that has pulled it off across an entire line.
Which one to buy
Aqualogica has about 10-12 unique sunscreen formulas. The store shows more SKUs because the same products come in different sizes (30g, 50g, 80g, 125g) and bundles (packs of 2, combos with other products). That is standard for e-commerce. The actual choice is simpler than it looks.
For oily skin: Radiance+ Water Light Fluid (₹449, 50g). Their lightest formula. Absorbs fast, matte-ish finish, works well in Indian humidity.
For dry or normal skin: Glow+ Dewy Sunscreen (₹449-599 depending on size). Their bestseller for a reason. Hydrating base, dewy finish, doesn't emphasize dry patches. If you have combination skin, this might feel too dewy on your T-zone.
For everyday no-fuss use: Bright+ Tone Up (₹499, 50g). Light tint, evens out skin tone slightly, good for days when you want minimal makeup.
For reapplication on the go: Glow+ Dewy Sunstick (₹599, 20g). Stick format, no mess, easy to reapply over makeup. Not a primary sunscreen but a solid reapplication tool.
Why I came back to Aqualogica
I started using Aqualogica sunscreens years ago when they were one of the few lightweight options. Then I stopped because the market offered more advanced formulations from brands like Re'equil and Minimalist. For the last couple of years, I didn't think about Aqualogica at all.
Then I tried the new Radiance+ range. And honestly, it surprised me. The formula is light. The mineral filters are excellent. There is no white cast on my NC37 skin. The price is competitive. It feels like a completely different brand from what I remember.
That pivot from old chemical filters to a full mineral lineup with in-vivo testing is not something most Indian brands pull off. Most brands just keep selling the same formula with updated packaging. Aqualogica actually reformulated. And the new formulations are genuinely good.
What to know before buying
- Stick with the new ranges. Radiance+, Glow+, Bright+ are the ones with the updated mineral filter systems. The older ranges (Detan+, Illuminate+) may still be available but use older formulations.
- Check the size before buying. The same sunscreen comes in 30g, 50g, 80g, and 125g. The per-gram price varies. The 80g and 125g sizes are usually the best value, especially during sales.
- In-vivo tested SPF. Aqualogica is one of the few Indian brands at this price point that does in-vivo SPF testing (ISO 24444 certified). This means the SPF 50 claim is verified on human skin, not just a lab calculation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Aqualogica sunscreens good?
The newer ranges (Radiance+, Glow+, Bright+) are genuinely excellent. Mineral filters, photo-stable, in-vivo tested, no white cast. The older ranges (Detan+, Illuminate+) used older filter systems. If you're buying now, stick with the new formulations.
Which Aqualogica sunscreen is best?
For oily skin: Radiance+ Water Light Fluid. For dry skin: Glow+ Dewy. For everyday no-fuss use: Bright+ Tone Up. All three use the newer mineral filter lineup.
Which Aqualogica sunscreen is best for oily skin?
Radiance+ Water Light Fluid. It's their lightest formula, absorbs fast, and doesn't leave a greasy layer. The matte finish holds up well in Indian humidity.
Does Aqualogica sunscreen cause white cast?
The newer mineral ranges are formulated to avoid white cast on Indian skin tones. The old ranges with titanium dioxide could leave a slight cast. The current Glow+ and Radiance+ lines are tested on Indian skin and designed for minimal to no white cast.
The verdict
Aqualogica is doing really well right now. They pioneered fluid sunscreens in India, lost ground when competitors caught up, and then pivoted into mineral formulations that are genuinely among the best at their price point. The new ranges have excellent filters, in-vivo testing, no white cast, and pleasant textures. The brand is making sunscreens the way the Indian market demands them to be made.
If you tried Aqualogica years ago and moved on, it is worth trying their new range. They are not the same brand they were.
